The Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access (GA) Grant is a need-based grant that assists eligible Maryland resident students. The maximum award amount is $18,000.
Eligibility requirements and Information:
- Must be enrolled for full-time credits (12+) for each fall and spring semester
- Must be a Maryland resident classified as In-state for tuition rate purposes
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if eligible or the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) One App by the March 1 deadline each year.
- Complete all the required verification requirements. Verification may be required by MHEC, the U.S. Department of Education, and the University of Maryland (UMD).
- If you are eligible for the GA Grant and are notified by MHEC, log in to the Maryland College Aid Processing Portal (MDCAPS) to view your grant offer, any required information you must provide, report your housing status, and accept your award.
- In addition to reporting your housing status to MHEC via MDCAPS, log in to our student Financial Aid Portal to complete the Housing Status Form under the To Do section. Please report the accurate housing status via MDCAPS that matches your UMD housing status. You can go back to MDCAPS to update your housing status to match what you reported to UMD. Your housing status determines the amount of the GA Grant you will receive
- If a GA Grant is offered, log in to our student Financial Aid Portal to complete the Housing Status Form in the To Do section. Please ensure the housing status you will report to MHEC via MDCAPS matches the housing status you report to UMD. GA Grant-eligible students who live on campus can receive up to $18,000. Eligible students who live off-campus or with a parent will receive a prorated grant amount.
- Eligible students must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements.
- Report all other outside financial aid you will receive via our student Financial Aid Portal. The total financial aid you will receive for the academic year, including the GA Grant, cannot exceed your cost of attendance.
- Eligible students must complete 30 credits (with a passing grade) for the academic year to maintain the full award amount. Students who complete 24-29 credits for the academic year will be eligible for a prorated amount. Eligible students can complete the 30 credits requirement during fall, winter, spring, and summer during the academic year.
